Bike Rentals

Thanks to a generous grant from Mountain Equipment Co-op, we now offer an affordable bike rental service, providing a range of second-hand mountain, road and cruiser bikes for short- to medium-term rentals. Our rental bikes are suitable for youth or adults who are looking for a bike while in Edmonton for a weekend or a few weeks to do some commuting or recreational cycling. They are not appropriate for competition—we do not have racing bikes.

Please note that we are a non-profit, volunteer-run organization and our bike shop primarily exists to help people fix their own bikes. Please be prepared for a wait of up to 45 minutes while your bike is safety-checked and paperwork is completed.

Our refurbished rental bikes are fully tuned-up before every rental and optionally (no additional fee) come with front & rear lights, a lock and a saddlebag with a basic repair kit. We have a limited number of helmets available for use as well, though we cannot promise fit, style, or availability for helmets. Helmets are mandatory in Alberta for people under age 18, but not mandatory for adults.

  • $25/day
  • $40/overnight
  • $60/week
  • $120/month

We accept cash or credit card (via PayPal). A $200 deposit ($400 deposit for tandem rentals) is also required per bike. Deposits, which can be paid via cash or credit card, will be returned in full upon return of the bike providing there is no damage beyond normal wear and tear, and all accessories are present. A portion of the deposit will also be withheld if bikes are returned late, according to the daily rate.

For more information about our bike and trailer rental service please email [email protected].

Pick-up and Returns

Please note that all rental bike pickups and returns must be made at BikeWorks South during our regular operating hours. Rates apply regardless of whether or not BikeWorks has regularly scheduled hours (i.e. if we’re closed on a Friday, or if you are unable to use the shop on a Women, Trans & Non-Binary Sunday, you still have to pay for the full time that you have the bike). Overdue rentals are charged by the day. Any rentals left outside of our facility while we are closed will forfeit the deposit.

Note that we do not rent bikes from our north location at this time. All rentals occur at our south location only.

EBC has two tandem bicycles available for rent. The first (pictured below) is a red, hand-built frame, built in Alberta by Arvon Stacey of Arvon Cycles. The bike is perfect for everything from wedding photos to weekend trips in the river valley to extended bike tours.

The captain (front) position is 55cm (requiring a rider of about 5’10” or taller), and the stoker (rear) position can be configured to fit a wide range of heights, from youth up to 6′ tall adults.

The second tandem bike available for rent is a vintage purple CCM mixte 3 speed with white balloon tires and is perfect for casual rides and photo opportunities. It is suitable for riders who are not tall enough to ride the Arvon tandem.

CCM Tandem

Rental rates for the tandem bicycles are double the rate for regular bikes: i.e. $50/day, $80 for overnight or $120/week. A $400 deposit is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I have to be a member?

A: While we encourage people to be members, as it supports our services (including the rental program, which does not generate a profit), it is not necessary to rent a bike. Cargo trailer rentals are required to have memberships.

Q: Do you rent road racing bikes?

A: No. Our rental fleet does not include any road bikes suited to racing or competition.

Q: Can I rent a bike or trailer indefinitely?

A: No, bikes and trailers must be rented for a specific period of time.

Q: Can I reserve a bike?

A: Bikes are rented on a first-come, first-served basis. You can, however, call during our regular open hours to see if we are likely to have bikes available on the day of your call.

Q: How long can I rent a bike for?

A: You can rent a bike for as little as a day or as long as a month.

Q: What if my rental bike breaks down?

A: Every rental bike optionally comes equipped with a basic repair kit. If you are unable to repair your bike yourself bring it to BikeWorks and we will repair it as quickly as possible. Please note however, that you are responsible for returning the bike in good condition and that costs for repairs stemming from anything but regular wear and tear may be deducted from your deposit. Also, the renter is responsible for transporting the bike or trailer back to BikeWorks should repairs be required. Note that bikes can be transported on all full size ETS buses as well as the LRT.

Q: Can I pay for a rental bike when I return it?

A: Payment must be made in full at the time of rental.

Q: Do you rent children’s bikes, seats or child trailers?

A: We have a limited number of smaller bikes that would typically fit children aged 10 or older. We don’t rent child seats, child trailers, trail-a-bikes or bikes with wheels smaller than 24 inches, though we may have these items, used, for sale at very reasonable prices at both of our locations.

Q: Do you rent car racks?

A: No, though we occasionally have used car racks for sale for low cost. You will have to come into either of our shops to see of there is something available that is compatible with your vehicle.

Q: Can I extend my bike rental if need be?

A: We will attempt to accommodate rental extensions whenever possible. Appropriate advance notification must be given in writing via email, and you will need to bring the rental bike back to the shop for an inspection and to pay the additional rental fee before or on the original due date.

Q: Do you rent tandems, recumbents or other such bikes?

A: We have a professionally hand-built Arvon tandem as well as a 1960’s 3-speed tandem available for rental. Rates and deposit are double that of a regular bike. The captain (front) position of the Arvon tandem is 55cm (requiring a rider of about 5’10” or taller), and the stoker (rear) position can be configured to fit a wide range of heights, from youth up to 6′ tall adults. The captain and stoker positions on the vintage purple tandem can accommodate adults ranging from 5’3″ to 6′ in height.

      Hi Mike,

We rent various bikes; mostly mountain and hybrid bikes, but a couple road bikes. You’ll have to come in-person to see. We do not rent anything high-end.

As soon as you know when you want to book it, e-mail us. Tandem bookings are also first-come first-served.

At 5’5″, you would not be able to captain the tandem, though you could ride in the stoker (rear) position.

That’s too bad that I would need to be in the rear position as my husband and I had hoped to rent a tandem and he is blind. Although it could make for a very funny video. Ha ha.

Do you know if anyone sells tandem bikes?

    1. Coreen [Likely posting from: Canada]

We’re actually getting another tandem ready to add to our rental fleet that will accommodate a shorter captain. If all goes well, it should be up and running in the next couple of weeks, and we’ll update this page.

Through my work with CNIB, I ran a program with Alberta Abilities Lodges Society and know they have tandem bikes for rent. Their website ( needs updating but the email info listed under the Contact tab is current. Happy trails :)

I am from Dartmouth NS and will be in Edmonton Oct 3 – 7. I would like to rent a road bike if possible. I also will bring my own pedals. Is this something that you can do? I would like to know if the bike I will rent is a touring bike or do you just have hybrids?

    1. Coreen [Likely posting from: Canada]

We have a few road bikes and a few hybrids, but most of the bikes in our fleet are rigid or hard tail mountain bikes. It shouldn’t be much of an issue to put your pedals on for the week.

    1. Coreen [Likely posting from: Canada]

All of the pedals and cleats we have in stock are used and have been donated by folks who don’t need them any more, and our stock constantly changes. You can peruse through our bins when you get here, but it is unlikely we’ll have two sets in ready to go condition in stock at any given time.

  3. MATTHEW MITSCHKE [Likely posting from: Canada]

Are you able to provide rentals to groups of 5-15 riders if I gather basic rider information in advance and coordinate a pick up time?

    1. Coreen [Likely posting from: Canada]

We may be able to provide group rentals for 5 or more people, but not for as many as 15. Because our policy with rental bikes is first-come, first-served, and because people can rent bikes for up to a month at a time, it is very difficult to predict how many bikes will be available on any given day. Weekends are especially popular for bike rentals, so we are unable to do pre-bookings for weekends, but we may be able to set something up for a weekday. If you email us at [email protected] with the exact numbers, date, size & type of bikes needed, etc, we may be able to work something out, though we can’t make any guarantees, particularly during the busy season.

      Hi Karin,

Our refurbished rental bikes are fully tuned-up before every rental and optionally come with front & rear lights, a lock and a saddlebag with a basic repair kit. There is no additional fee for any of these.
