  Bikely - Edmonton

  Put very simply, Bikely helps cyclists share knowledge of good bicycle routes. It can be quite tricky traversing a car dominated city by bicycle, particularly when you need to travel an unknown route to a new destination. But the chances are, someone has cycled that way before you. Bikely makes it easy for him or her to show you the best way.

    People’s Pedal: Edmonton’s Bicycle Sharing Cooperative

    Formally dissolved in 2010.  The People’s Pedal was founded by members of the New Democrat Youth of Alberta Environment Caucus and operated a bicycle sharing system in the City of Edmonton. Remember the red bike racks with red bikes?  That was the People’s Pedal!

    The Bike Root

    The Bike Root is a community bike shop, we are not-for-profit and volunteer run. For a membership fee of $10 per year anybody can have access to our shop and its tools during the hours that we are open. We are cooperatively run, therefore we encourage the participation of our members to shape the goals and direction of the Bike Root.

    Our goal is to foster healthy lifestyles, a sense of community, and environmental sustainability at the University of Calgary and in the surrounding community by providing members with the tools, space and expertise to build and maintain one’s bicycle. In short we want to get more people on bikes and keep them on the road.

    In July 2010, the Bike Root closed at its location on the U of C campus.  In September 2011, it re-opened at its current location.

    The Good Life Community Bike Shop

    The Good Life Community Bicycle Shop is a nonprofit, community bicycle repair, education and resource centre. We offer our members FREE repair space, tools and instruction and free workshops in the evenings. We also offer affordable, reconditioned/recycled bikes and parts for sale. The Good Life is community meeting space open for use to environment and community minded groups. We are almost fully run and operated by volunteers.  We use a consensus decision making model.

    The Students’ Union launched the bike library program in 2005 and a steady flow of people have been visiting us ever since. The Bike Library rents bikes to all members of the campus community, which we define as being comprised of students, staff and faculty. We have approximately 30 bikes available for rental on a one month basis. Our bike selection ranges from mountain bikes, cruisers, road bikes and various hybrids. Our green bikes come equipped with a U-lock, front and back light, and a bell.

    CBN is a Toronto organization dedicated to bikes.  Their signature program is BikeShare, lets members borrow one of hundreds of distinct yellow bikes located at hubs around the city.  CBN also offers ToolWorks, a public access shop space with tools and trained mechanics, once a week.  Instructional classes are available including women only sessions.

    Right to Move was started in the spring of 1997 by a group from QPIRG-Concordia who believed bicycles are a form of transportation that should be available to all, regardless of gender, age, wealth or ethnicity. Bicycles are a viable urban transportation option, one far more economical and more ecological than cars in moving people to where they need to be.

    In order to make bicycling a more accessible transportation option, RTM:
    -have a drop-in, do-it-yourself bicycle shop where members can fix their own bicycles with the help of volunteer mechanics
    -hold hands-on workshops series on bicycle maintenance three times per year in English and French
    -accept and collect bicycles destined for the landfill, fix them and donate them or sell them at low cost to those who would not otherwise be able to afford a bicycle

  The Alberta Bicycle Association is the affiliated Provincial Sport Organization of the Canadian Cycling Association.  ABA facilitates the introduction to organized cycling and develops strong competitive cycling programs, while protecting and advocating the rights of cyclists.

  The ABA Recreation & Transportation Committee works on issues regarding bicycle commuting.  They also provide insurance for cycling clubs and events.

  Argyll Velodrome

  The Argyll Velodrome was constructed in 1977 by the City of Edmonton as a primary site for competitive cycling during the 1978 Commonwealth Games.  It is 333.33 meter x 7 meter wide with a 33 degree bank.

  75  Unless the context otherwise requires, a person who is operating a cycle on a highway has all the rights and is subject to all the duties of a person driving a motor vehicle under Part 1 and this Part and Division 2 of Part 5 of the Act.
  
  
  
  77(2)  A person who is operating a cycle, other than a motor cycle, on a highway shall operate the cycle as near as practicable to the right curb or edge of the roadway unless that person is in the process of making a left turn with the cycle.
  
  (3)  Notwithstanding subsection (2), a person who is operating a cycle, other than a motor cycle, on a one-way highway in an urban area shall ride as near as practicable to either curb or edge of the roadway unless that person is in the process of crossing from one curb or edge of the roadway to the opposite curb or edge of the roadway.
  
  (4)  Notwithstanding subsection (2), a person who is operating a cycle, other than a motorcycle, on a highway that has shoulders
  
                        (a)  in the case of a highway that has paved shoulders, shall operate the cycle on the right shoulder, and
  
                        (b)  in the case of a highway that does not have paved shoulders, shall operate the cycle as far to the right of the roadway as practicable, unless that person is in the process of making a left turn.
  
  
  
  78  A person who is operating a cycle on a highway in the same direction in the same traffic lane, except when overtaking and passing another cycle,
  
                        (a)  shall not operate the cycle adjacent to another cycle travelling in the same direction, and
  
                        (b)  in the case of a cycle other than a motor cycle, where more than one cycle is travelling in the near vicinity of and in the same direction as another cycle, shall operate the cycle directly in line with and to the rear or front of the other cycle.
  
  
  
  83(1)  A person shall not use the horn or other audible warning device of a motor vehicle, motor cycle, moped, power bicycle or bicycle
  
                        (a)  except for the purposes of giving notice to other persons that are on or approaching a highway or within the vicinity of the vehicle, or
  
                        (b)  so that it makes more noise than is reasonably necessary to give notice to other persons that are on or approaching a highway or within the vicinity of the vehicle.
  
  (2)  A person operating a motor vehicle, motor cycle, moped, power bicycle or bicycle shall sound the vehicle’s horn or other audible warning device whenever it is reasonably necessary to warn persons on or approaching the highway in the vicinity of the vehicle.

  (2)  A parent or guardian of a person who is less than 18 years old shall not authorize or knowingly permit the person to operate or ride as a passenger on a bicycle unless that person is properly wearing a safety helmet.
  
  (3)  No person shall operate a bicycle on which a passenger who is less than 18 years old is riding unless the passenger is properly wearing a safety helmet.
  
  
  
  99(1)  A person shall not ride a bicycle at night time unless the bicycle has the following:
  
                        (a)  at least one headlamp but not more than 2 headlamps;
  
                        (b)  at least one red tail lamp;
  
                        (c)  at least one red reflector mounted on the rear.
  
  
  
  (2)  A person shall not ride a bicycle unless the bicycle has a brake.

  Alberta Public Interest Research Group (AP!RG)

  AP!RG is a University of Alberta student-run, student-funded, non-profit organization dedicated to community-led research, education, advocacy, and action in the public interest.  AP!RG provides administrative, informational and technological resources to help student and community working groups to transform social concern into effective action.
  

  AP!RG is one of many PIRGs across Canada. Each Public Interest Research Group is a student organization based on the premise that students are citizens, and as such, part of their education should include recognizing and engaging in societal problems. PIRGs exist to provide training, support, and opportunities for students to be active citizens in their communities. Through involvement with PIRGs, thousands of Canadian students have learned skills in consensus decision-making, group facilitation, events organizing, media relations, and community-based research.   CAN-BIKE Cycling Education Program

  The Canadian Cycling Association’s CAN-BIKE program is a series of courses on all aspects of cycling safely and enjoyably on the road.  It is oriented toward recreational and utilitarian cycling. The CAN-BIKE cycling safety program provides a nationally standardized set of courses that can be taught through a variety of organizations who are interested in education, safety and health.

  A traveling library of interesting bicycles, scooters, bike trailers and other eco-mobile modes of transportation. This Bike Library gives citizens an opportunity to try out a number of different ways to be more ecomobile before spending money at a local bike store.  The Try-It Bike Library is hosted by Community Services Program Team Staff and is set up to come out to community events at a nominal charge to cover the staff costs.
