Special Needs Children’s Learn to Bike Course
Posted by Chris C
Thursdays from April 30 through to June 11
Begins: 6:00pm to 7:30pm
We will be running two concurrent special needs childrens’ Learn to Bike courses. You can help out as an assistant instructor.
Our program is a volunteer run program designed for children with a variety of special needs. It is a free program with a limited enrollment so that we can offer one on one support. We typically require students have a referral from a PT, Adapted PE consultant or an OT. We have this process simply so that we can ensure that the children that are enrolled are suitable for the course—the course dynamics change significantly if we do not place a student appropriately.
We are running two concurrent groups this year; one is a group with mostly visual supports and little verbal instruction, and the other is a cognitive oriented approach where students are taught to problem solve. The one challenge that we are unable to deal with in either group are significant behaviors.
There is also a program through CAGE at the University of Alberta that offers a similar indoor program (Cycle Challenge).
We need 15 assistant instructors who are experienced bicyclists. Some formal training such as CanBike is preferred but not required. There is a detailed course outline to assist new instructors and bring return instructors back up to speed. .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) if you can help out and, if you cannot make all the dates, when you are able to attend. I teach a variety of courses during the year, all of them enjoyable, but this course is the most fun and rewarding of them all.
Please feel free to pass this invite on to any knowledgeable cyclists, physical therapists or occupational therapists you know.
