Have apartment. Need bike rack.

Looking for a source for permanent bicycle racks?  Try these options. (Thanks to Claire Ellick at the City of Edmonton, and Stephen Talman, for the info!)

If you would like to request the installation of City of Edmonton bike racks at a specific location (the post-ring/Q-rack style pictured above), call the City of Edmonton Sustainable Transportation at 780-496-2615.  If you need something more, such as bike racks for your parkade, read on.

Be sure you refer to the City of Edmonton Zoning Bylaw - Bicycle Parking brochure. Not all of the bike racks sold by the following companies meet bylaw requirements.  If a rack fails to meet those requirements, it means you can’t securely lock a bike to it.  Please avoid racks that only allow a person to lock the wheel (but not the frame) using a U-lock, since you’ll just end up with bent wheels, and a lot of stolen bikes. A large portion of common bike racks have fundamental design failures and can’t hold bicycles securely. You’ll be wasting your money and time if you get one of these racks. The new ring-post style of racks that the City of Edmonton is using are an excellent style: they allow all varieties of bicycles to be securely locked.

EDMONTON

  • City of Edmonton Sustainable Transportation - 780-496-2615 - For post-ring rack installation requests
  • Soldan Fence & Metals - They make a basic hanger-style rack (galvanized steel).  The “low style” rack does not meet City guidelines
  • Local metal shops (such as Edmonton Supply, 780-424-0776) will also build custom bike racks, given a design.
  • A & T Rolling and Forming - 780-436-4367 - 8726 61 Ave - Price is $40 per bend and they can only do a minimum radius bend of 12”. Also, for an extended “U” rack a minimum 1’ straight section is required between bends.
  • Oxford Machine & Welding - 780-451-6424 - 11612 170 St - Price is also $40 per bend but they can do 5” radius bends.

http://www.capitalbikeandwalk.org/bike-parking.php - There is a really good booklet by Capital Bike & Walk (out of Victoria) called ‘Bicycles at Rest’.  These can be ordered (hard copy) for $5 and are probably the best comprehensive guidelines in terms of do’s and don’ts, what is or isn’t functional, options for indoor bike parking (businesses).
