Velo-city Global Cycling Planning Conference

Posted by Alex H
Tuesday June 26, 2012 - Friday June 29, 2012
Begins: 6:36 pm

The most notable cycling planning conference in the world is coming to Vancouver in June 2012. Velo-city Global is the offers delegates from around the world a chance to share best practices for creating and sustaining cycling-friendly cities, where bicycles are valued as part of daily transport and recreation.

Velo-city Global conferences bring together politicians, engineers, planners, architects, social marketers, academics, researchers, environmentalists, advocates, educators and industry representatives, who join forces and foster trans-national collaboration long after the last delegate has headed home. The event also draws experts from related areas, such as health, economics and the environment.

Velo-city began in 1980 in Bremen, Germany with deep ties in the founding of the European Cyclists’ Federation. Since then conferences have been held in cities including Copenhagen, Brussels, Barcelona and Montreal.

This year’s conference theme is ‘Cities in Motion’ with a number of exciting program themes.

The primary goal of the conference is to share best practices for encouraging cycling as a means of transport.  Other important aims are to:

  • Spread knowledge of quality, positive, evolving information about cycling and transport planning
  • Provide valuable publicity for cities that have good cycling provision networks
  • Encourage the recognition of cycling as an efficient, healthy, environmentally friendly means of transport and recreation
  • Further the integration of cycling planning into transport and land-use planning, and other relevant sectors
  • Bring together those actively involved from all relevant fields, so that they can have a profitable exchange of experience and expertise
  • Seek involvement from all relevant stakeholders, including environment, health and business

The conference will provide a wide range of real-world examples of cycling as form of transportation with the benefits to the environment, personal health and economy.

Early registration prices end March 31, 2012.

Note from EBC:
We would like to invite fellow Edmonton cycling transportation supporters and developers to attend this International Cycling Planning Conference in Vancouver. Edmonton has much to do in the way of bicycle transportation development and it is in our best interest to learn from other cities’ experiences.  The Edmonton Bicycle Commuters’ Society will be attending!  We hope we will be joined by keen Edmontonians so that we can bring back a wealth of understanding and action plans for our city.  Please share the conference info with your colleagues who may be interested.

(For anyone interested in community programming, the Bicycle Collective Network is also hosting their annual conference, Bike!Bike!, in Vancouver to coincide with Velo-City Global.)

Event Location: Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre, 1088 Burrard Street, Vancouver, BC
