The Edmonton Bicycle Commuters’ Society (EBC) is a registered non-profit society and has been a leader in the Edmonton and area environmental and cycling community since 1980. EBC promotes and facilitates cycling as everyday transportation in Edmonton.

EBC’s objectives are:

  • To provide, administer and maintain a multi-use facility for Edmonton and area dedicated to providing cost-effective, do-it-yourself bike repair facilities and access to an environmentally sustainable, economical means of transportation;
  • To educate the public by providing courses, seminars and workshops about bike mechanics and/or safe and effective riding;
  • To extend services to marginalized members of the community as well as new-comers;
  • To facilitate communication between cyclists and governments or others to improve bicycle infrastructure and policy, and;
  • To assist the Edmonton community at large in the promotion, encouragement and understanding of cycling culture.


Position Overview
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing the projects, staff, and day-to-day operations of EBC, while working with the Board of Directors to create and pursue the organizational vision.


Responsibilities
The duties will include:

  • Direct day-to-day operations, manage existing programs and oversee new program development and execution.
  • Write grants for additional support of EBC activities and staff positions.
  • Liaise with the City of Edmonton, non-profit organizations, local businesses and other cycling organizations.
  • Act as a representative of EBC and handle external communications, including media and public inquiries, contacting members, and networking with other organizations.
  • Coordinate, train, and supervise other staff and volunteers.  Delegate responsibilities where appropriate.
  • In conjunction with the treasurer, manage the financial health of EBC.
  • Set organizational goals for management practices, as well as EBC programs.  Identify the required resources to achieve those goals.
  • Develop and run cycling related courses and presentations.
  • Work with other staff to coordinate and train volunteers for events. Work to develop a volunteer base and set procedures which will build a sustainable volunteer system for the organization.
  • Develop processes and policies to improve EBC operations and promote a smooth running organization.
  • Interpret and implement policies approved by the Board.
  • Advocate, through external relations and project management, for cycling and cyclists in Edmonton.
  • Organize community events to promote and support cycling in Edmonton, and coordinate an EBC presence at select events executed by third parties that support this mandate.
  • Attend monthly board meetings and work with the board of directors to develop an organizational vision.
  • Be an ex officio member of all committees.
  • General office administration.


Skills & Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have:

  • Post-secondary education in a related field
  • Experience in a leadership position in a non-profit organization
  • Skilled use of MS office products including database systems, spreadsheets, word processing; and the ability to quickly learn new software and technology
  • Ability to plan activities, set deadlines and budgets, and reliably adhere to them
  • Skilled at time management and prioritization
  • Staff and volunteer supervision experience and strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal board supervision
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Financial management skills
  • Administration skills


Hours of Work
40 hours per week, flex time available

Remuneration
$35,000 to $45,000 per annum

1st, 3rd & 5th Sundays of the month reserved for Women and Transgendered persons only, 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month open to the general public

BikeWorks North Hours:
Throughout May, BikeWorks North will be operating in limited capacity as we continue renovations. There will be limited bike sales, limited used parts available, and only a limited selection of new parts. For full service, please visit BikeWorks South.
Thursday: 6pm - 9pm
Saturday: 1pm - 5pm
Sunday: 1pm - 5pm


BikeWorks (both locations) is closed for statutory holidays unless otherwise noted. We will be closed on Victoria Day, May 21, 2012.
